On the final day of the legislative session, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bipartisan bill (SB 426) granting certain benefits to firefighters upon diagnosis.
The law protects firefighters, treating cancer like an on-the-job injury. The measure covers the full cost of cancer treatment along with a $25,000 payout., and also gives firefighters disability pay and death benefits for beneficiaries. It covers 21 forms of cancer.
The bill was a response to studies proving that firefighters are more prone to being diagnosed with cancer. Lawmakers in the Sunshine State unanimously approved the cancer benefits bill, helping families pay medical bills.
